International Coverage
Purchasing international travel health insurance is a good way to protect yourself against unexpected medical expenses. The cost of medical treatment in a foreign country can be prohibitive without insurance, but you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your expenses are covered by the policy. Fortunately, there are several options available, including a short-term supplemental policy. These policies can pay directly to the hospital for emergency treatment. You may also be able to use them to supplement your current health insurance plan.
You’ll want to compare the costs and coverage of various policies. For instance, long-term travel medical insurance is guaranteed to renew for a specific number of trips. While these policies tend to be cheaper, they are not necessarily as comprehensive. If you’re a frequent traveler, you may want to consider getting multi-trip coverage. The downside to this type of policy is that you won’t be covered if you have U.S. health insurance.
Alternatively, you can buy a supplemental international travel health insurance plan that fills in the gaps of your primary healthcare plan. These plans can even provide primary healthcare. It’s important to note that most travel health insurance policies don’t cover pre-existing conditions. A waiver of this exclusion can help you avoid being denied coverage for treatment for an existing condition. In such a situation, you’ll want to consider getting a separate policy.
