About · Smart Insurance Agents LLC
An independent agency built for the problems that show up after enrollment.
Most agencies sell a plan and move on. We built this one around the calls that come afterward: the network that dropped a doctor, the drug that came off the formulary, the supplement application that got declined. Independent, licensed in more than 40 states, and paid the same regardless of which plan you choose.
Who we are
Smart Insurance Agents LLC is an independent insurance agency specializing in two things: Medicare for people already enrolled, and health coverage for small employers.
Independent means we are not employed by a carrier and not a captive agency. We hold appointments with roughly 100 carriers, which is what makes it possible to say that a plan is wrong for you without it costing us the sale.
We work by phone and video, including weekends. There is no field office to visit and no one will show up at your door.

Licensing is public record. You should check ours, and anyone else's, before taking advice about your coverage.
How we get paid
Carriers pay us a commission when someone enrolls. You pay nothing, and the amount does not change based on which plan you pick.
There is no fee to you
Advice, plan comparisons, and enrollment help cost nothing. Your premium is the same whether you enroll through us, through another agent, or directly with the carrier.
Commissions are regulated
For Medicare Advantage and Part D, CMS sets maximum commission amounts and they are broadly similar across carriers. That is deliberate, and it is why steering you toward one carrier would not pay us more.
We do not offer every plan
No agency does. We tell you when the right answer is a plan we cannot sell, or when the right answer is to stay where you are and change nothing.
One exception, stated plainly. Choosing and enrolling in a Medicare plan is always free. Separately, we offer a paid one-hour consultation for people who want a broader review of their coverage, and we occasionally take on complex advisory work for employers and individuals where the question goes beyond selecting a plan.
When work falls into that category, we tell you the fee and what it covers before you commit to anything, in writing, and you decide whether to proceed. There is no fee unless you have agreed to it in advance. Nothing on the Medicare side ever carries a charge to the beneficiary.
What we do
- Medicare plan reviews for people already enrolled who have a problem with the plan they have.
- Medicare Supplement underwriting strategy, including guaranteed-issue rights people do not know they have.
- Part D and drug cost analysis against your actual medication list, not a generic comparison.
- Turning 65 planning, including the employer-coverage question that decides whether you enroll or delay.
- Small group health insurance: fully insured, level-funded, ICHRA and QSEHRA.
What we do not do
- Cold call. If we have not spoken, we will not be calling you.
- Sell your information to lead buyers.
- Work in California. We are licensed in more than 40 states, and that is not one of them.
- Recommend a plan change when your current plan is already the right one.
- Charge Medicare beneficiaries a fee for plan selection or enrollment help.

How we write what we publish
Everything on this site is written to be checked. If we cannot cite a number to a primary source, we do not print it.
Primary sources only
Figures come from CMS, Medicare.gov, the Federal Register, or state departments of insurance. We do not cite another agency's blog as the source for a number.
Dated and re-verified
Every article carries the date its facts were last checked and the documents they were checked against. Medicare rules change annually and stale content is worse than none.
Reviewed by a licensed advisor
Articles are reviewed by a licensed insurance advisor before publication. Nothing is published that we would not say on a call.
Have a plan and a problem with it?
Send your situation and we will tell you whether it is fixable, what it would take, and whether it is worth doing. One business day, no cost, no obligation.
