Utah gives you a Medigap switching window every birthday.
Every year, your birthday and the 59 days after it are your chance to move to a plan with equal or lesser benefits with your current company, with no health questions. See your dates, then compare Medigap and Medicare Advantage.

Medigap or Medicare Advantage in Utah?
The right choice depends on your doctors, where you spend the year, and how you want to pay for care. Here is how the trade-off plays out in Utah.
How the Utah birthday rule works
Utah’s rule is about stepping down with your company, not shopping other companies. It helps when your premium climbs and you want lighter coverage.

- Your window60 days, starting on your birthday, every year.
- What you can buyAny plan your current company sells with equal or lesser benefits, such as Plan G to Plan N, or a lower-priced version of the same plan.
- What you cannotMoving to a different company, or to a richer plan, still means health questions outside your first 6 months.
- Why it mattersPick your company carefully at 65. In Utah the birthday rule keeps you with it, so its rate history matters more.

On Medicare before 65 in Utah
Utah does not require companies to sell Medigap to people who get Medicare early because of a disability or ESRD.

- Your optionsSome companies may still sell to you, but they can ask health questions and charge more. Medicare Advantage and Part D are open to you without health questions.
- At 65You get a full 6-month open enrollment at 65, when every Medigap plan and company is open to you with no health questions.
- Plan aheadIf you are on Medicare before 65, mark the month you turn 65 and start comparing Medigap about 3 months before.
Price is today. Rate history is the next ten years.
Every Plan G pays the same benefits, so companies compete on price. But many Medigap policies are priced by your current age, so the premium rises as you get older, on top of any rate increases the company files with Utah regulators. Two companies can quote nearly the same price today and be far apart in five years.
Spending winters in St. George or out of state?
Plenty of Utah retirees split the year between the Wasatch Front and warmer places. How your coverage travels matters.

Questions Utah clients ask
How does the Utah Medigap birthday rule work?
Each year, for 60 days starting on your birthday, you can move to a Medigap plan with equal or lesser benefits offered by your current company, with no health questions. The rule took effect May 7, 2025.
Can I switch Medigap companies on my birthday in Utah?
Not under the birthday rule. Utah’s rule keeps you with your current company. Changing companies usually means health questions unless another guaranteed-issue right applies.
Can I switch from Plan G to Plan N on my birthday in Utah?
Yes, if your current company sells Plan N. Plan N has equal or lesser benefits than Plan G, so it qualifies.
Can I get a Medigap plan in Utah if I am under 65?
Utah does not require it. Some companies may sell to you with health questions. Your guaranteed window opens at 65.
Does it cost anything to work with you?
No. Insurance carriers pay agents a commission, and your premium is the same whether you enroll through us or directly with the company.
